Nanoporous Polymers from Block Polymer Precursors

Science2012_fig5Nanoporous polymers have promising applications such as filtration, separation, storage, and catalysis. In order to meet the demands for applications, it is important to develop methodologies that can finely tailor size, structure, and functionality of nanopores. To this end, block polymer self-assembly provides a powerful route allowing generation of well-defined nanoporous polymers with extraordinary control. Well-defined microphase separated structures can be transformed into nanoporous structures with corresponding length scale by incorporating a sacrificial segment in the block polymer architecture.
